Dances Up Earthquakes - a new spirit for the board game expansion Spirit Island: Nature Incarnate
This spirit is extremely destructive, but it does so in revelry. They seem to get a long with other spirits and the Dahan, which is featured in my card illustrations.
I had a lot of fun with the concept art stage of this spirit - the prompt was a non-horse, sort of alternate centaur. We settled on a giraffe inspiration, but very abstracted.
This spirit uses a lot of fire and rock in their abilities, and wanted that featured in their design and tableau card.

Initial concept sketches. Giraffe inspiration. The client liked the right-most design- make the design as strange and surreal as possible!
Peacock inspiration with "up" pointing arrows in their feathers
A tiger inspiration. Since this was an earthquake spirit I was trying to think of interesting earth formations. Maybe some geode crystals for some visual texture / interest?
Elephant inspiration. It was fun to think of ways these enormous centaur-like creatures could "dance".
